The Rhinoplasty Clinic in Philadelphia, PARhinoplasty is a surprisingly complex procedure, as the anatomy of the nose requires a careful approach to produce optimal results with this cosmetic nose surgery. For that reason, there are a few frequently asked rhinoplasty questions surrounding rhinoplasty techniques. Below, we’ll tackle some of the most common rhinoplasty questions to provide a full understanding of these techniques.

What’s the Difference Between Open and Closed Rhinoplasty?

Open and closed rhinoplasty techniques are two different surgical approaches. With open rhinoplasty, an incision is made along the columella, which is the piece of tissue that separates the nostrils. With this incision, the surgeon is able to “open” the nose and get better access to the nose anatomy. This may be a required approach for more extensive surgeries. A closed rhinoplasty requires no external incision. Instead, incisions are made inside the nostrils, where there will be no visible scarring. This is often the preferred approach for patients and surgeons alike, although it may not be appropriate for all rhinoplasty treatments. Ultimately, the open rhinoplasty will leave minor scarring but permits greater treatment possibilities. A closed rhinoplasty eliminates external scarring and can reduce post-operative bruising and swelling.

What is the Difference Between a Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is primarily performed for the external features of the nose, and most often as a cosmetic procedure. The rhinoplasty surgery is intended to enhance the appearance of the nose so that it best complements the other facial features and produces a more harmonious appearance. However, it can also be performed to correct breathing issues and abnormalities that originate in the nose. A septoplasty is performed to correct the positioning of the septum, a wall of tissue that separates the nasal cavities. While this may produce some cosmetic benefits, it is primarily performed to alleviate nasal blockage and restore normal breathing ability. The rhinoplasty and septoplasty techniques can be performed simultaneously if needed.

What is a Cartilage Graft in Rhinoplasty?

A cartilage graft is a rhinoplasty technique that uses cartilage from other areas of the body to augment the nose and produce the desired results. Cartilage is a soft and malleable tissue that is found in the nose, the ears and even the ribs. By transferring cartilage from these areas to the nose, patients can enhance the shape of the nose with natural body cartilage. This results in long-lasting results that look and feel completely natural. For patients who require the enlargement of certain features of the nose, the cartilage graft technique is preferred and highly effective.
